Which accessories do you use with smoking wood?

The choice of accessories depends on the type of smoking wood you are using.

Wood chips are usually used in combination with a smoke box or smoke tube. This allows the chips to smolder in a controlled manner, creating stable smoke development.

You can read more about this on our wood chips collection page.

Smoking chunks are larger and are usually placed directly between the coals. This allows them to smolder slowly and produce smoke for a long time.

Also check out our smoking chunks collection if you do low & slow BBQ sessions.

Why use smoking accessories?

Smoking wood can be used directly on coals, but accessories often make it easier and more controllable to use.

A smoking accessory helps to:

  • make smoking wood smolder in a controlled way
  • achieve stable smoke production
  • distribute smoke evenly throughout the BBQ
  • use smoking wood on gas barbecues

Accessories are especially useful for wood chips, as chips often burn too quickly without a smoke box.

Smoker Box for BBQ

A smoker box is a metal box specifically designed to smolder wood chips on the barbecue.

You fill the smoker box with wood chips and place it on the grill grate or above a burner. As soon as the chips start to smolder, smoke is released and spreads throughout the barbecue.

A smoker box is especially popular with:

  • gas BBQs
  • kamado barbecues
  • charcoal BBQs

Check out our smoker box for BBQ if you want to use wood chips in a controlled manner.

Smoker tube

A smoker tube is a cylindrical accessory in which you can use smoking wood or pellets to produce smoke for an extended period.

The tube is filled with smoking wood and lit at one end. The wood then smolders slowly, producing smoke for a long time.

Smoker tubes are often used with:

  • Kamado barbecues
  • Pellet grills
  • Gas BBQs
  • Smokehouses

Check out our smoker tube for BBQ if you want to add smoke to your barbecue for a longer period.

Storage buckets for smoking wood

When you barbecue regularly, you quickly use different types of wood. It is therefore useful to keep your smoking wood dry and neatly stored. With a storage bucket, you can easily store wood chips or smoking chunks and protect them from moisture.

A good storage bucket ensures that your smoking wood:

  • stays dry
  • stays clean
  • is easy to take to the BBQ
  • remains neatly stored

Especially with wood chips, it is important that the wood stays very dry. Damp smoking wood can smolder less effectively and can produce less attractive smoke.

Our storage buckets are therefore ideal for storing wood chips and smoking chunks, so your smoking wood is always ready for your next BBQ session.

Smoking Accessories for Beginners

If you haven't worked with smoking wood before, a smoking accessory can make the process a lot easier.

With a smoke box or smoke tube, you can easily start smoking without having to modify your barbecue.

Many beginners, for example, start with a combination of wood chips and a smoke box. This allows you to quickly experiment with different types of wood and discover which smoke flavor best suits your barbecue dishes.

How to use wood for smoking on your BBQ?

Using wood for smoking is easy, but the method of application varies by the type of smoking wood.

Using smoke chunks

Smoke chunks are larger pieces of wood that smolder slowly and release smoke for a long time. They are therefore ideal for kamados and charcoal barbecues.

Use smoke chunks as follows:

  1. Place 1 to 2 chunks between or on top of the glowing coals.
  2. Close the BBQ so the smoke can spread well.
  3. Let the chunks smolder slowly while your dish cooks.

Due to their size, chunks release smoke for a long time, making them perfect for low & slow preparations such as ribs, brisket, or pulled pork.

Using wood chips

Wood chips are smaller and produce smoke more quickly. Therefore, we advise not to place the chips directly in the heat, but always to use them in a smoking accessory.

Use wood chips as follows:

  1. Fill a smoke box or smoke tube with wood chips.
  2. Light the chips briefly so they start to smolder.
  3. Place the smoke box or smoke tube in the BBQ and close the lid.

This creates controlled smoke development and prevents the chips from burning directly.

Tip for the best smoke development

Always use a small amount of smoking wood and add more later if necessary. This prevents the smoke from becoming too intense and maintains a nice, balanced smoke flavor.

Combine your accessory with the right wood type

A smoke box or smoke tube only really works well with the right type of wood. These are all the flavors from our assortment, briefly explained:
